The very heart of the matter is the DC motor that is used to charge batteries. These are easily obtained from the sources listed in the detailed plans. It can be shipped direct to your home in a matter of a few days, so take this action first.
While you are waiting why not build the blades, body and tail of your new wind machine. The blades for larger machines should be made out of wood; we recommend using cedar as it is light and strong. Finding good clear straight grained wood is not as hard as you might think.
If you are building a smaller one, with charging capacity of under 500 watts (a good starter machine) you can use heavy PVC pipe for the blades. It works great but we don’t recommend it for machines with blades longer than 3 feet.
The length of the blades determines how much power is produced. Learning how to build a wind generator in Canada is really about trying to synchronize the size of your DC motor and the blades.
Larger blades produce more power, but also need a larger DC motor to handle that extra power output.
You can find used TV towers all across Canada for your project as most people are switching to satellite TV all across the country. They are strong and usually free, a great plus for the budget minded family.
Fashioning the body and tail can be accomplished while you are waiting too. You can use PVC pipe to house your DC motor, as outlined in the plans or you can use recycled metal too. The choice depends on availability.
