Homemade Wind Generator - How To

Homemade Wind Generator

homemade wind generatorBuilding our own homemade wind generator is how our family really got started on the road to energy independence. It took us quite a bit of time to figure out a good design but once we did it was only a matter of building them to get our renewable energy output to a level where it would supply all of our energy needs.

First we started with the wind generator blades for our homemade wind generator, but before we begin we should list all of the things you will need to get started.

  • Only a small workspace is needed
  • Good homemade wind generator plans
  • Various wrenches, saws, and electrical pliers and only a few more tools
  • And a good helper to hold the wind generator blades while they are fastened.

Recently we have been testing various models of premade wind generator blades in our homemade wind generator. The best ones we have found so far are ‘Windmax’ and they are available on ebay, at quite reasonable prices. Worth checking out if you are short on resources for building your own.

Even after coating the pipe with UV pipe in our own early wind generator, the pipe would crack in very cold weather, and extreme heat.

It just has not held up like the wood blades in our homemade wind generator design. We have settled on clear grain cedar (either Eastern White or Western Red Cedar) as our wood of choice. It is a bit lighter than the spruce that was originally used by Marcellus Jacobs in his now famous Jacobs Wind machines. But, it is just as strong it seems and slightly more flexible.

Our family is blessed with an abundance of trees on our property and we use our chainsaw mill to cut lumber for our various projects from mature and dead trees on the property. If you need to go to the lumber yard or hardware store to get the various elements for your homemade wind generator that is fine, and good material is available at reasonable prices.

After you have these two components the rest is pretty easy, putting together the body and mounting hardware. The homemade wind generator is a great family project too, with the kids wanting to get involved from the start.

Enjoy your first renewable energy project, it should be fun and building a homemade wind generator is a great place to start your journey to even possibly living off the grid.
